The Making of a Sweetgrass Basket

The art of basketmaking was brought to South Carolina by slaves who came from West Africa more than 300 years ago. For generations the art has been passed down from mother to daughter to granddaughter.
I chatted with Alfreda for awhile .......she is the 5th generation of her family who has been taught this art form . I wanted a photo of the artist who made my basket and she very sweetly obliged me .
